Welcome!

Pfluger Research Group, May 2023

Welcome to the Pfluger Reasearch Group at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point! The core goal of our research group is to explore and develop sustainable and resilient solutions that advance both human health and ecosystems within our natural environment.

To accomplish our core goal, we conduct research in the following areas: (1) exploring microbially mediated organic waste-to-energy systems to enhance energy resilience and security; (2) translating resilience theory into practice for military installations; and (3) exploring sustainable and resilient water and energy systems within the water-energy nexus. Our group also conducts engineering education and leader development research.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is an undergraduate institution that educates, trains, and inspires our cadets to be leaders of character and prepares them for a lifetime of service. Upon graduation, our cadets are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army.

News!

  • Research Group Publication in Environmental Engineering Science – congrats Chels!

Congrats to MAJ Chelsea Linvill, several in our group, and several collaborators in publishing a manuscript titled “Energy Balances for Proposed Complete Full-Scale Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Facilities” in Environmental Engineering Science. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1089/ees.2023.0076

  • 2023 Scholarship Winners – Congrats to Marley and Annesley!

Our research group had an awesome year graduating several outstanding students, two of which earned scholarships. Cadet Marley Wait earned a Marshall Scholarship and is currently studying at Kings College London https://www.marshallscholarship.org/scholars/2023-scholars/marley-evalyn-wait). Cadet Annesley Black earned a Fulbright Scholarship and is currently studying at Reykjavik University in Iceland (https://www.westpoint.edu/news/press-releases/west-point-cadets-named-fulbright-scholars). Cadet Elle Bennett earned honors as a top graduate from West Point and is on her way to serve in the Engineer Branch. Congrats to our rock stars!

  • Catching up – a couple recent group publications

Over the last year our group has published several peer reviewed works of note. Dr. Jennie Callahan published a manuscript titled “BioWin modeling of anaerobic sludge blanket treatment of domestic wastewater” in Bioresource Technology Reports (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biteb.2022.101231).

2LT Anna Tovkach, a group alum and now a Knight-Hennessey scholar at Stanford University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (https://knight-hennessy.stanford.edu/people/anna-tovkach), was the lead on a published manuscript titled “Structured decision making for assessment of solid waste-to-energy systems for decentralized on-site applications” in Environmental Systems and Decisions (https://doi.org/10.1007/s10669-022-09885-9).
